Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for supervision of dredging operations
   • Access, interpret and apply dredging operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Access, share and clarify the geological and survey data with team members
   • Prepare an implementation action plan, in consultation with team members, making best use of the available resources
   • Acquire and make available the necessary resources for the dredging operations
   • Issue clear and timely instructions to team members and others involved
2. Monitor, adjust and report on execution of the dredging operations
   • Ensure safe, effective and efficient execution of the dredging plan
   • Monitor dredging operations performance, and ensure achievement of planned outcomes
   • Initiate adjustments to work programs, in consultation with team members, considering variances and non-achievement of planned outcomes
   • Identify training needs of team members and prepare training plans
   • Complete and submit written reports
   • Submit reasoned recommendations to improve the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of the dredging operations

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient supervising of dredging operations including:

performing basic mathematical calculations

accessing and analysing survey and geological data

analysing hazards and risks, and implementing control measures

selecting and assigning resources, plant and equipment

works effectively with others to undertake and complete supervision of dredging operations that meets all of the required outcomes including:

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating clearly and concisely with others to resolve coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities

providing team leadership with clear and timely instruction and supervision to those involved in dredging operations

identifying the training needs of others and preparing training plans

demonstrates completion of supervising dredging operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

assessing and assigning appropriate plant and equipment, and operational techniques

monitoring dredging operations and making required adjustments for variances and non-achievement

assessing outcomes to make reasoned recommendations and write reports

preparing training plans

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of supervising dredging operations through:

organising skills, work planning techniques, and work monitoring methods

researching, analysing and supervising dredging operations

writing reports to communicate procedural activity, breach or inadequacies to procedure and review process of the dredging operations

applying problem solving skills to technical resources and infrastructure issue
